Ashley Thompson, one half of photography duo Thompson Homonnay, has a whimsical way of describing her job: “I’m a photographer who captures the joy and wonder of kids and teens in fun and relaxed environments.” Doesn’t that just make you want to sit in on a shoot? Or, better yet, be a kid again?
“Thompson Homonnay strives to create a natural and real feel in fashion photography, discovering interesting textures and lighting and revealing the narrative within in the images, all with an artistic twist,” Ashley said. “Together, we create images that tell a story and hopefully induce childhood memories and feelings.”
As a child, Ashley wanted to be an interior designer. She got involved in photography when she chose to switch from a design career to something she truly loved. “I guess the interior designer in me grew up.” It was a fantastic (and bold) choice to make. Today, the best part of her photography career is working with young subjects, learning each unique personality and capturing moments with her camera.
“I feel lucky to be where I am right now career-wise. Having the freedom to be who I am as a photographer and being part of a creative duo only adds to the artistic process. I’m fortunate to have a partner who I believe in and who believes in me, working in an atmosphere where we constantly learn together, laugh together and create amazing images together.”
Hoping to get involved in the fashion photography industry yourself? Ashley suggests that you shoot all the time. “You never know when you are going to learn something or where inspiration will be found.” She also encourages young photographers to always be themselves and do what they love to do, even if it’s not necessarily in-line with industry standards.
