A few weeks ago, we introduced you to Nyssa Zinn, our newest art director and prop stylist. (If you missed that post, you can still check it out!) Nyssa told us about her childhood dreams, her beginnings as a creative assistant and the unique approach she takes when working on a project. This month, we chatted with Nyssa a bit more to get a feel for her job and learn what goes into the daily grind. She also offered up some hard-earned insider knowledge to help budding creatives get started in the field!
Describe your job in 3 to 4 sentences.
My day-to-day job functions are constantly evolving. They range from sourcing vintage props and styling homes to merchandising retail stores and giving creative direction to brands and businesses. I am often a crafter of props, a designer of spaces and a manager of sourcing, showcasing and styling products. With each project I embark on, I rely on the core premise that my aesthetic taste and creative energy will guide my decision making as well as give direction and input.
What’s your favorite part of this career?
My projects are driven by my ability to make things look unique and beautiful. A pretty picture can bring creativity and happiness into people’s lives. I feel lucky and glad to be given the opportunity to share what I love to do. I believe in the power of sharing the good: an idea of how to design your space, new inspiration for your life, a feeling of calm in moments of crazy…
What advice would you give someone who wants to get started in the industry?
I’d start by looking for stylists, brands or creative directors who are doing something you’re inspired by. Try assisting a diversity of people and companies so that you can see what area of commercial photography and advertising you like best. When you find your passion, the rest will come. Stay fluid when it comes to experiencing new things and learning from as many people as you can. That’s what will give you both an education and a start.
