Even when she was little, Ana Homonnay dreamt of being a photographer, and she’s one of the few people who actually turned a childhood fantasy into reality. Today, photography is almost the main love of her life, right after her son and husband.
As part of creative duo Thompson Homonnay, Ana primarily photographs kids and teens. “[Ashley and I] love to work together on location, letting the kids do their thing with honesty and authenticity,” she told us. “We document moments that feel [like they’re] part of a story and we hope will remind people of their own childhood memories.”
Ana got her start in the professional world at MTV, where she had plenty of freedom to experiment with motion and stills. Today, she most enjoys shooting stories with Ashley. “We like to build a narrative with the images,” Ana explained. “We are always concerned about what kind of story we will tell and it is very important for us to be present emotionally and sincerely with the kids.”
While there are plenty of artists who thrive best when alone, Ana and Ashley are different. “It is great to exchange ideas and build something together as a duo, especially with such a talented photographer as Ashley. The set became more fun and rich.”
When we asked her for some advice about getting started in the commercial photography industry, she put an emphasis on shooting, a suggestion we hear time and time again from the photographers we speak with. “I think shooting is the most important thing,” she said. “ In the beginning it’s great to try it all. Street photography, studio, documentary, fashion, everything, and over time you’ll find your niche that will likely be much more narrow [and] highly focused.” She also suggests landing a job as a photographer’s assistant.
